The Toyota Tercel was the #1 Japanese carmaker's entry level vehicle for two decades. The Tercel first came out in 1978 in Japan (1980 in North America) and after five generations of the economy car, production ended in 1999. The Tercel was Toyota's first front-wheel drive automobile and during its lifetime was selected a "Best Buy" by Consumer Digest and named "Best in Class in Initial Quality" by J.D. Power & Associates.
